I Had to Leave My Dream Job Because of Perimenopause

One woman's story of making a major career change to protect her health during perimenopause.

Where I Started

At 45, I had the job I'd worked toward for twenty years. I was a senior executive in a high-stress corporate environment. I was managing a team, traveling constantly, working sixty-hour weeks. Then perimenopause hit, and everything became unmanageable. The stress triggered worse hot flashes and mood swings. The travel triggered insomnia. The constant pressure left no room for self-care. I was having panic attacks at work. I was crying in bathrooms. I was considering just quitting and walking away from everything I'd built.

The Turning Point

My doctor finally told me that the stress of my job was making my perimenopause symptoms worse. She suggested I think about whether this job was worth my health. That was a hard question. The job paid well. I had status. I had identity wrapped up in being this executive. But my health was deteriorating. I was a prisoner to my symptoms because my job demanded more than I could give while managing perimenopause. I had to choose. The job or my health.

Here's What I Did

I spent three months thinking about what I actually wanted. Not what I was supposed to want, but what I actually wanted. The answer was a job with less stress, more flexibility, and time for self-care. I took a lower-level position at a different company. Less pay. Less prestige. But forty-hour weeks. Remote flexibility. Supportive leadership. My identity had to shift. I was no longer the executive. I was a working woman managing her health. By month two in the new job, my stress was lower. By month three, my sleep had improved. By month four, my hot flashes were less intense.

When It Worked

The shift came when I realized that my health was worth more than career prestige. The first few months were rough emotionally. But by month four, I was sleeping through the night more often. By month five, I was actually enjoying coming to work instead of dreading it. My perimenopause symptoms didn't disappear, but they became manageable because I wasn't adding constant stress on top of them.

What Changed for Me

I'm now 47, and I don't regret leaving that job. I have my life back. I have time for exercise, for sleep, for relationships. I have energy for myself. I'm making less money, but I'm spending it on things that matter instead of scrambling to recover from stress. My perimenopause symptoms are manageable. My life is manageable. That trade-off was worth it.

For You

Sometimes perimenopause requires major life changes. If your job is making your symptoms worse, you don't have to just suffer through it. You can change jobs. You can negotiate flexibility with your current employer. You can step back from the career track. Your health is the most important thing. Protect it, even if it means changing the plans you had.
