The Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist I Didn't Know I Needed
One woman's story of how specialist pelvic floor care transformed her perimenopause experience.
Where I Started
At 45, I had multiple pelvic floor symptoms that I didn't realize were connected. Stress incontinence. Pain during sex. Chronic pelvic tension. Poor orgasm quality. I'd mentioned these to my gynecologist, and she'd basically said, 'Yeah, that happens during perimenopause. You can try kegels.' I'd done kegels for months with no improvement. I assumed I was broken. I stopped trying to fix things and just accepted them as part of perimenopause.
The Turning Point
A friend mentioned that she'd seen a pelvic floor physiotherapist and it had changed her life. I'd never heard of such a specialist. But my friend explained that pelvic floor dysfunction is a real thing that requires real rehabilitation, like any other muscle group. That generic kegels don't work if you don't know what you're doing. That there are specialists whose entire job is to assess and treat pelvic floor dysfunction. I made an appointment.
Here's What I Did
The pelvic floor physiotherapist did a full assessment. She found that my pelvic floor muscles were actually too tight, not too weak. Kegels were making it worse. She created a personalized protocol involving relaxation techniques, specific strengthening exercises, and education about how perimenopause affects pelvic floor function. I did the exercises and techniques for twelve weeks. By week four, I noticed improvement in pain during sex. By week eight, the stress incontinence was almost gone. By week twelve, I felt like a different person down there. Everything was working better.
When It Worked
The shift came when I realized the problem wasn't my body being broken. It was my body not getting the specific care it needed. A general gynecologist can't address pelvic floor dysfunction. They need a specialist. By month two of treatment, I was having sex without pain. By month three, I was confident in my body again. By month four, I realized how much of my mental health was connected to my physical comfort.
What Changed for Me
I'm now 46, and I'm continuing my pelvic floor exercises because I know they work. I'm also a huge advocate for finding a pelvic floor physiotherapist if you're struggling with any pelvic floor symptoms. It's not something you have to just accept. It's something that can be treated and resolved. I feel so much better physically and emotionally because I got the right specialist care.
