I was hearing a constant ringing in my ears. It was driving me crazy. I kept thinking I left the stove on or that there was something wrong with my hearing. I went to an audiologist who said my hearing was fine but I had tinnitus. My doctor explained it was likely related to my perimenopause. Once I understood the connection, I could manage it.

How I got here

The tinnitus started suddenly. One day I was fine and the next day I was hearing this constant high-pitched ringing in my ears. It was maddening. I was stressed about it, which made it worse. I was convinced something was seriously wrong with my hearing.

What I actually did

My audiologist ran tests and confirmed my hearing was normal but I had tinnitus. My doctor explained that hormonal changes during perimenopause can affect the auditory system. She recommended several strategies. I started using white noise to mask the ringing. I reduced stress through meditation and yoga. I reduced caffeine and alcohol which can worsen tinnitus. I started taking magnesium which can help with tinnitus. Most importantly, I stopped focusing on the ringing. When I stopped worrying about it and started just accepting it, it became less noticeable. Within three months, the ringing was barely noticeable.

What actually changed

My tinnitus decreased. More importantly, it stopped bothering me because I stopped fighting it. I accept that it might be there sometimes but I do not focus on it. My quality of life is back to normal.

What my routine looks like now

I use white noise when the ringing is bothersome. I practice stress management. I avoid caffeine and alcohol. I take magnesium. I do not obsess about the ringing. I track my tinnitus patterns using PeriPlan.
